Kidney Mass and and Surgery
Kidney mass surgery may be performed in open, laparoscopic, robotic, radical, partial and even cryosurgically. A kidney cyst or kidney mass that is made up of malignant, or cancerous, cells can be removed to stop the cancer from spreading to other parts of the body or causing further damage to kidney tissue that could result in renal failure.
Kidney mass surgery is an important step when dealing with renal cell carcinoma, the most frequent form of kidney cancer among adults. Renal cell carcinoma surgery can involve removing the entire kidney organ through a procedure called a nephrectomy. Sometimes a kidney mass is so large and invasive that none of the kidney can be saved. Other times, the kidney tumors can be isolated and removed during a partial nephrectomy while leaving healthy parts of the kidney in place.
During an open nephrectomy or open partial nephrectomy, a surgeon will make an incision and remove the kidney tissue by hand. However, this type of surgery causes more post-operative pain and a longer recovery time. A doctor may choose to perform a laparoscopic nephrectomy or laparoscopic partial nephrectomy by creating several small incisions in the patient’s skin and inserting specialized instruments that are used to remove the kidney or mass. One instrument has a small camera that projects the surgical cite onto a monitor for the doctor to view what he or she is doing. These types of surgeries are much less invasive, having less bleeding during and after the procedure as well as a faster recovery time.
The da Vinci nephtrectomy and da Vinci partial nephrectomy are other types of kidney cancer surgery used by urological surgeons. Dr Fernando Bianco, one of our leading doctors at Urology Specialists, performs these types of robotic nephrectomies because it makes visualizing the kidney and kidney mass removal a 3D magnified experience and gives precise micro movements with the surgical instruments. Dr. Bianco and the founder of Miami Specialists, Dr. Edward Gheiler also use kidney cryosurgery or kidney cryotherapy to freeze and kill the cancer cells of the mass, leaving the healthy kidney tissue to heal and eventually function on its own. This procedure allows for less bleeding, shortened recovery time, and less cost with promising results. Other techniques include the use of medications, radiation, and chemotherapy.
